By way of the highway

Highlighting how trucking affects our lives, And the people who make it happen

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, on a typical day in the United States about 32 million tons of goods valued at 25.2 billion dollars move via trucks on our nation's highways.

Here at Holland, we understand that at the core of those statistics are real, hardworking people--people who climb into a truck cab every day to keep America's gears turning. That's why we have created our new series "By way of the highway"--to honor the people who transport the goods we need to survive.

Mike Tobolic started his education on trucking while working in a warehouse in his high school years. Mike learned the ropes from the veteran drivers working there at the time, and attributes some of his passion and aptitude to a family history that includes professional drivers in Chicago.

Mike has been in the transportation industry for a total of 38 years, and has spent 34 and a half of those years driving for Holland.

Mike currently logs five days a week as a city driver out of the Grand Rapids, MI terminal, averaging 10-12 hours a day on the road, and dedicating his limited free time to his five children and girlfriend.

That's a long weekly haul on the short run, but Mike hasn't grown weary from the heavy schedule. Nor has he grown contented with his veteran status. On the contrary, Mike pushes himself day in and day out, year-round to maintain the utmost levels of safety and performance.

With 31 years of accident-free driving, and a slew of honors and awards to his name, it is clear that Mike's dedication has paid off.

In 2004, Mike was named Grand Champion in the Michigan Truck Driving Championships, won first place in the 5-axle category, and was named Michigan Driver of the Year.

In 2006, Mike was awarded the President's Award from Holland, and was a nominee finalist for the highly prestigious America's Road Team.

Yet with all that decoration in just a few short years, Mike didn't stop working towards improvement.

On June 9, 2012, Mike again took first place in the Michigan Truck Driving Championships in the 5-axle category poising himself for a return to the NTDC.

"There's certainly plenty of training involved," explained Mike. "But being a safe driver also requires a good attitude. You have to put everything aside when you get on the road--focus, and keep your cool."

Mike is a member of the safety committee at the Grand Rapids terminal, as well as a driver trainer.

His commitment to safety has found a comfortable home in Holland over the years, he explains--"Holland is a safety-minded company that takes care of its customers with on-time, dependable service. I've always enjoyed working here."

Yet drivers like Mike Tobolic are precisely what make that high level of service possible. With safe, dedicated, and customer service committed drivers like Mike on our team, there's no way to lose.

Congratulations to Mike on his recent big win, and good luck at nationals!
