Holland remembers

On the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our soil, we remember the innocent victims, the first responders who went to their aid and the many men and women who didn't seek to be heroes, but were thrust into those roles by the events of 9/11.

Let us never forget their sacrifices.

Holland makes strong showing at NTDC

Atlanta Driver Herschel EvansCongratulations to Herschel Evans (Atlanta) for his outstanding achievement at this year's National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) from Aug. 9–13 in Orlando, Fla.

In a repeat of his 2008 Championship performance, Herschel took home first place nationally in the 5-Axle Class.

"There are 3 million truck drivers in the United States," said Herschel. "I met some of the best of the best in this competition. To finish at the top of my division with so many great competitors is a real honor."

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) sponsors the NTDC, also known as the "Super Bowl of Safety," where more than 400 drivers compete for national titles in nine vehicle classes and the coveted National Grand Champion title. The drivers accumulate points through a written examination, pre-trip inspection test, skills test and interview.

Inbound transportation for better inventory management

Man in warehouse. Every shipment is a priority with HollandTaking control of your inbound transportation is an effective way to reduce inventory-carrying costs while maintaining healthy customer service levels.

Holland can help!

When your purchase orders stipulate your transportation provider, you gain more than volume transportation rates based on inbound and outbound usage. You also get better visibility into when orders ship, when they will arrive, and the precise quantity of goods included in the shipment.

This information is key to inventory management.

It allows you to diminish order lead times, potentially reduce safety-stock levels and react more quickly to changes in customer demand.

Of course, this works best when your transportation provider delivers with the reliability and flexibility of Holland! In addition to the most next-day lanes in the region, Holland rules with on-time, damage-free service.

And with visibility to your inbound shipments, you can schedule your operations and dock staff with confidence.

Should there be a hiccup in the supply chain, Holland can help you make up for any lost time with our guaranteed and expedited services.

Supply chains move smoothly upstream and downstream.

To bring this level of service to your business, visit our website or call 1-866-465-5263.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

Atlanta Driver Herschel Evans at the NTDCHerschel Evans, our newly-crowned national truck driving champion, isn't ashamed to say it. He's a little bit competitive.

"Actually, I'm more like a freak when it comes to competition of any kind," he says.

"Some people compete very hard in the business world. As drivers, we compete against each other every day for a customer's business. When we get to the truck driving championships, we compete against each other in a different way, to win at other things."

And win he did in August when the 44-year-old professional driver from Georgia placed first in the 5-Axle Class competition at the 2011 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC).

It was Herschel's second time as national champ: he captured the 5-axle crown back in 2008, too.

Evans has been driving for 23 years, the past 17 with Holland. Still, driving isn't his only talent. Through the years, he has also competed at a national level in pistol shooting contests and in archery.

In Orlando, taking on the challenge of going head to head with the best drivers in the business, Herschel says he was surprised, as he always is, to come home a winner.

His strategy this year was to not try to score a perfect 50 on the various course challenges, but to be patient in racking up as many points as possible each step along the way.

"This year, it was all about not being greedy," he says. "I heeded my own advice and decided to stick with a plan of focusing on just one challenge and then another. It worked out pretty well."

While another national title means a lot to him and his wife, Holli, Herschel says his year-round charitable work is just as rewarding if not more so.

Every June since 1988, he has been integrally involved in raising funds for young people afflicted by cancer, helping to lead an Atlanta motorcycle ride for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. He also participates in the Charity "FunDrive," an annual event that benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"I've always had a place in my heart for the underdog, especially for those people who others don't think have a chance," he says.

"It feels great to win trophies, but even better to help out some folks in need. I've been able to do both this year, and I can honestly say, it's hard to find a downside."

Herschel is just one example of the people and service that keep customers returning to Holland.

Georgia map with Atlanta highlighted, sites of interestMost of us have seen Atlanta from the air. After all, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport is the world's busiest passenger airport. However, are you familiar with Underground Atlanta?

After the razing of Atlanta during the Civil War, the city began to rebuild itself around the gully where railroad tracks remained. By the 1870s, the area was once again bustling with a train station, banks, hotels, saloons and offices. So busy, in fact, that a plan was put into place to erect a series of bridges across the train tracks. The iron bridges were replaced by concrete bridges, ultimately elevating the network of streets.

Businesses closed up their first floors and moved operations to the second floors of the buildings.

Underground Atlanta was essentially forgotten to the people of Atlanta, but it preserved a treasure trove of architectural details from the 1920s.

In 1968, the city declared it an historic site and redevelopers turned the area into a retail and entertainment center. While the popularity of the area has ebbed somewhat, it is still the place the city goes to celebrate.

Holland has been a part of Atlanta since 1989, providing services to businesses from the South Carolina border to Auburn, Ala.

Our 200+ employees in Atlanta move around 2.5 million pounds of freight each day, most of it with next-day deliveries, including expedited next-day service to key industrial markets, such as Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit and Pittsburgh.

Holland knows Atlanta, and shippers know they can count on Holland, the leader in next-day service.
