On April 29, YRCW announced it had entered into definitive agreements with lender groups, pension funds and the Teamsters, providing for their support of a comprehensive restructuring plan designed to lay the foundation for long-term success.

The company remains on target to close the restructuring in July.

Water wise

Car going through high waterThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is warning that half the United States is at above-average risk for flooding this spring.

Stay safe. If you see water flowing across the road, don't go there.

At highway speeds, you can lose control with as little as one inch of water on the road. Once a vehicle is lifted off the road surface, it can be pushed sideways and rolled over, trapping passengers.

Even water that is standing on the road can be dangerous, hiding wash outs and deep potholes. A better idea is to plan alternate routes and stay clear of water on roadways.

Marshall embodies the ideals of integrity, respect, customer service excellence and hard work, and accordingly, is a recipient of the 2010 I Am Holland award.

"My job keeps me going," says this 47-year veteran driver. "I enjoy doing business with my customers. You talk with them, and get to know them, and they get to like you and give you shipments."

Memphis, Tenn.,service center manager Bill Munka says that Marshall deserves the credit for winning important business around Tupelo, Miss., which is about 80 miles away. "We have significant market share in the area, including 8 to 10 large accounts, all because of Marshall. He's built strong relationships with customers and keeps them happy."

Marshall has been a Holland city driver for 17 of his 47 years in his career. He still arrives at the job an hour early each day, "I like the people I work with, and I enjoy working for a truck line like Holland. We keep shipments from being damaged, we take care of our customers, and we make sure we deliver on time. It's all in a day's work."

It's work that has helped Marshall and his wife raise a family of 9 children and spoil 13 grandchildren.

Marshall is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to Holland.

A Place Holland Calls Home

Memphis, Tenn.

Tennssee map with Memphis highlighted, sites of interestNamed after the ancient Egyptian city on the Nile and perched on the Mississippi River, for many, Memphis is synonymous with music. From the early gospel music of Mahalia Jackson and Lucie Campbell, to the Beale Street Music Festival, music has played a big part in the city known as the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock and Roll.

Beale Street venues nurtured the blues sound of W.C. Handy, B.B. King and Jimmie Lunceford, and influenced the early rockabilly style of the popular recording artists of Sun Records: Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

Stax Records developed a name for itself with the rhythm and blues music of Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge and Isaac Hayes.

Competing label, Hi Records, contributed to the Memphis sound with artists such as Al Green, Tina Turner, Don Bryant and Ann Peebles.

Just outside Memphis sits Olive Branch, Miss., the fastest-growing city in America and home to a Holland 80-door service center. "We have 80 doors, but we work as if it's a 120-door center," says service center manager Bill Munka. "We don't know the word 'quit.'"

With Memphis geographically centered in the United States, the city is home to seven main rail heads. Goods are railed into the wholesale distribution system and sent out on LTL trucking. Our Memphis center provides next-day service that reaches as far as Chicago, Kansas City, Mo., Dayton, Ohio,and Spartanburg, S.C. The Memphis service center also handles pickups and deliveries in a 125-mile radius.

Conference Board index shows slight improvement in consumer confidence

people spending moneyIn its April report, The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® showed a gain from 63.8 in March to 65.4 in April.

According to Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, "Consumer confidence, which had declined sharply in March, posted a modest gain in April. Consumers' short-term outlook improved slightly, suggesting that the uncertainty expressed last month is easing. Inflation expectations, which had spiked, retreated somewhat in April. Although confidence remains weak, consumers' assessment of current conditions gained ground for the seventh straight month, a sign that the economic recovery continues."

Safety performance at record highs

side by side trucksThe American Trucking Associations reported in April that truck-related fatalities on the nation's highways dropped in 2009, making it the industry's safest year since the government began tracking.

Data from the Federal Highway Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show the rate fell 14.1 percent from 2008.

Non-manufacturing sector shows growth at slower rate

people in restaurantThe Non-Manufacturing ISM Report on Business® for March 2011 revealed that key indicators continue to grow, but at a slower rate.

The Non-Manufacturing Business Activity Index was 59.7 percent, down from 66.9 percent in February. The New Orders Index was 64.1 percent, down 0.3 percentage point. The Employment Index was 53.7 percent, down from 55.6 percent in February. An index reading above 50 percent indicates expansions.
