By the end of 2010, nine men joined the elite group of almost 100 of those logging 2 million miles as Holland drivers without a preventable accident. To achieve that milestone takes a passion for safe driving and a lot of years in the driver's seat of a Holland power unit!

"Sometimes we're referred to as the 'cowboys' in the industry, because we do things a little differently . . . we go beyond what's necessary. It's our work ethic," says Lurie "Lou" Williams, Cleveland.
Lou gives the example of the way we load trailers so that some shipments aren't touched at all until they reach the destination service center. "It cuts down on damage that way," Lou explains.
A professional driver with Holland since 1997, Lou currently is on "permanent" assignment at a customer's facility, personally loading three or four Holland trailers a day. "It keeps me in shape!" he says. "And I enjoy it, it keeps me busy, which is much better than sitting around."
Known for having a bit of a sweet tooth, Lou regularly brings in big bags of candy which he shares with others. "They call me the 'Candy Man' here." Lou admits with a laugh. "I put handfuls of candy on everyone's desks, and they know they can always get more."
In 2010, Lou was nominated by his co-workers and selected by Holland leadership for the coveted "I Am Holland" award, which is presented each year to those employees who demonstrate the Holland core values at a distinctly high level.

A Place Holland Calls Home
Cleveland may be home to 12 Fortune 500 manufacturers and two institutions of higher learning, but for many, the siren's call to this city on the southern shore of Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
In 1986, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation selected Cleveland as its permanent home and engaged Architect I.M. Pei to design the museum.
Following its mission to educate on the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened in September 1995. Since then, more than 8 million people have experienced an impressive collection of artifacts, interactive kiosks, film and video, and music.
Holland also calls Cleveland home, first opening its doors in 1980. Today, Cleveland is one of the largest outbound service centers in the Holland network with 102 dock doors and a next-day reach from Appleton, Wis., to St. Louis, Toronto to Raleigh, N.C.

Service industries show fast-paced expansion in January
During January, the U.S. Non-Manufacturing Index expanded at its fastest pace since 2005, reaching 59.4, according to the Institute for Supply Management.
January's readings exceeded forecasts.
Canada trade deficit up
In its Feb. 11 report, the U.S. Census Bureau reported the Canada trade deficit for goods increased from $21.6 billion in 2009 to $27.7 billion in 2010.
Exports increased $44.2 billion, primarily in automobiles, parts and accessories, while imports increased $50.2 billion, primarily in passenger cars and crude oil.
Residential construction off in December
The National Association of Home Builders in February reported a fall in residential construction spending for December, attributing the decrease to declines in multifamily construction and improvements spending.
The NAHB is forecasting single-family housing starts to be up significantly in 2011 and 2012. It also predicts improvement in multifamily starts, noting that fourth-quarter rental vacancies fell to their lowest level since 2003.
Materials pricing index hits 12-month high
The Industrial Price Index for the week ending Jan. 21 reached 139.0638, up 25.2 percent from the same time last year and up 13.2 percent since the week ending Nov. 26. The Economic Cycle Research Institute, in association with the Journal of Commerce, publishes the index.
It looks at the prices of 18 industrial materials, including aluminum, plywood, burlap, crude oil and hides, and its increase is a sign of accelerating business growth.
