Transporting our heartfelt appreciation

Transporting care packages to military personnelWhen a St. Louis radio station and the Teamsters Local 600 organized the collection of care packages for troops in Afghanistan, Holland was there to help.

On Saturday, July 31, donations of non-perishable food, health and hygiene products, travel games and stationery poured in—enough to fill more than 700 care packages! Holland employees helped sort, package and seal individual boxes, and then transported the boxes to government facilities for shipping to Afghanistan.

While Holland is known for on-time, damage-free shipping, this project achieved even greater results—the happiness of our country's soldiers who face danger and struggle with the loneliness of missing loved ones everyday.

Thank you to all who made contributions for this important mission. We were proud to be part of the response.

A Place Holland Calls Home


Indianapolis Motor Speedway, map with Indianapolis highlighted, sites of interestSaid to be within a day's drive for half the population of the United States, there are many good reasons to plan a trip to Indianapolis.

It's a city full of surprises. Sure, we know the Super Bowl XLI-winning Colts. Then, there's "the Greatest Spectacle in Racing," the Indianapolis 500, held each Memorial weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But there's more than Colts and cars in this midwestern metropolis.

Like many cities, transportation played an important role in its development. An 1827 Congressional grant gave the state of Indiana the funds to build a canal that would connect the Wabash River to the Maumee River. Today, Central Canal forms the backdrop for more-recreational types of activities in the White River State Park (WRSP).

A trip to WRSP includes venues such as the Indianapolis Zoo, the White River Gardens, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, the NCAA Hall of Champions, an IMAX theater, Indiana State Museum and Victory Field along with space to walk, trails to bicycle, and boats to paddle away an afternoon.

Indianapolis is thought to be second only to Washington, D.C., in the number of memorials. Perhaps its most-famous monument, situated in the center of the city, is Soldiers and Sailors Monument, dedicated to those who died in the Civil and Spanish-American wars. The Indiana World War Memorial Plaza features the American Legion Mall with its World War II, Korean and Vietnam memorials, and the Cenotaph Square Memorial, an empty soldier's tomb honoring the memory of those who fought and died in the World Wars. The Admiral Raymond Spruance Memorial Basin honors the military expertise of this World War II hero and is a recognizable part of the Indianapolis cityscape.

Estimated to be the 14th largest city in the United States by population, Indianapolis is larger than Boston, Seattle or Denver. In addition to being the state capital, Indianapolis is a city where tourism, healthcare, education and finance all play an important role in the city's economy.

Manufacturing growth continues

Manufacturing processIn the United States and internationally, the manufacturing sector expanded during August. In the United States, this marks the 13th consecutive month of expansion for the sector. According to the Institute for Supply Management, its manufacturing index rose from 55.5 in July to 56.3 in August (a reading above 50 indicates growth).

Globe showing United States, Central and northern South AmericaThe Transportation Department reported that June trade using surface transportation between the United States and Canada and Mexico was up 4.6 percent in value over the prior month, and up 37.6 percent over the same month in 2009. Surface transportation trade between the United States and Canada totaled $42 billion for June; surface transportation trade between the United States and Mexico was at 27.8 billion.

Consumer confidence up slightly

People walking in a hallwayThe Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index for August was at 53.5, up from 51 in July. The August 2009 reading was 54.5. "Consumer confidence posted a modest gain in August, the result of an improvement in consumers' short-term outlook. Consumers' assessment of current conditions, however, was less favorable as employment concerns continue to weigh heavily on consumers' attitudes. Expectations about future business and labor market conditions have brightened somewhat, but overall, consumers remain apprehensive about the future," says Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board's Consumer Research Center.

Tips to Make Your Life Easier

Revised BOL for shipping hazardous materials

Canada flag stuck in Ontario mapBeginning Oct. 1, 2010, some hazardous material shipping documents may require a contact name or contract number in addition to the 24-hour emergency response telephone number. Holland is ready for those shipments with a revised bill of lading form.

This new version is available as a paper form, EDI, and on our Holland website. When you create a BOL online you also have the option to simultaneously schedule a pickup, print a PDF of the bill of lading and print a shipping label. The electronic BOL data integrates into the Holland system, which minimizes key-stroke billing errors and improves data integrity for detailed tracking information on the shipment.
