Dog days of summer

We all love vacations, but when the stress of travel mingles with summer heat waves and congested roadways, tempers can fly.

To keep your cool when behind the wheel, take the advice of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety:

  • Don't offend
  • Don't engage
  • Adjust your attitude

And remember to relax—It's summer!

Canada service that gives you the advantage

Cross-Border Expertise, Holland tractor-trailer

If cross-border commerce with Canada is an important part of your business, Holland can give your supply chain a real advantage.

In addition to the most next-day lanes into and out of Canada, you'll also experience the service excellence that earned us Canadian Transportation & Logistics magazine's Shipper's Choice Award for the last two years.

Holland provides you the real advantage of:

  • Speed and Reach: Cross-border solutions from Holland keep your supply chain running on schedule with 20 percent more next-day lanes between the United States and Ontario than our fastest LTL competitor. Second-day transit times are available from as far away as Atlanta, Memphis and Kansas City. testimonial Our fast transit times allow you to quickly stock product or replenish inventory.
  • Reliability: Your shipments will be there when you need them with our 99 percent on-time performance between the United States and Canada and extremely low claim ratio. Guaranteed deliveries before noon and before 3:30 p.m. mean you or your customers will receive shipments in time for processing the same day they arrive.
  • Efficiency: As a government-approved provider in the Free and Secure Trade program, Holland enables your shipments to gain access to the FAST-lane at the border. It's one more step toward accelerating and streamlining the border crossing.
  • Expertise: Holland is border-security compliant and certified in C-TPAT, FAST, CSA and PIP programs. Our participation in these programs translates to faster border clearance for your shipments, a secure supply chain, dedicated lanes and a strong Customs partnership.
  • Control: With use of the Pre-Arrival Release System (PARS) for northbound shipments, and Pre-Arrival Processing System (PAPS) for southbound shipments, the Customs clearance process begins instantly at pickup, and release information is electronically processed before the shipment even reaches the border. More than 99.8 percent of Holland shipments clear the border without Customs issues.
  • Convenience: Our specialized customer service provides door-to-door tracking, rate quotes, documentation requirements, and transit times. Your shipments are immediately accessible for delivery on arrival.

Add the Holland advantage to your cross-border supply chain.

Peak performance this Peak Season

Stop-watch with guaranteed window timesAt a time when a more-traditional Peak Season is shaping up, the American Trucking Associations Chief Economist Bob Costello says trucking recovery is in full swing, citing solid freight volumes, tightening capacity and signs of a driver shortage waiting in the wings.

Shippers could face some of the same challenges that plagued them earlier in the decade at a time when retailers with increasing frequency are demanding compliance with must-arrive-by-date windows. Miss the delivery window, and you could be facing penalties that detract from your margins.

Holland lets you deliver shipments whenever your retail customers require them with the flexibility of single-hour, multi-hour, single-day, and multiday delivery window capabilities. We help you eliminate chargebacks by allowing you to control when and where you want your products delivered.

Holland has long-term relationships with major retailers. We understand their delivery requirements and the needs of suppliers shipping to these retailers. We've fine-tuned our services to meet retailer and supplier needs and offer a complete and integrated supply-chain solution.

And data integrity through EDI ensures greater efficiencies in your entire process from order processing and pickup to delivery. The results can mean more sales and favorable stocking positions for your products.

See for yourself why Holland is a leader in retail services. Go to or call 1-866-465-5263 today.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

Robin MurphyRobyn Murphy learned many things from her father. How to drive a truck really well was just one of them. "Dad owned equipment, and I started driving back home," says Robyn.

In a predominantly male profession, Robyn often surprises customers and those receiving shipments when she arrives.

"I get a lot of comments," laughs Robyn. "Usually it's 'you go girl!' "

Gender aside, Robyn is recognized for her driving skills, according to Detroit service center manger, Mark Domako. Mark gives the example of heavy construction taking place at a customer's location, which made pickups and deliveries difficult. "The customer called to say he'd watched many men who couldn't back up to the dock because of the construction. Not the case with Robyn. recognitionThe customer said she put that trailer right where it needed to be."

Robyn has been a professional driver for 23 years, the past 11 with Holland. "I just love my job," she says. "The customer always comes first for me, and I try to be helpful. Whatever needs to be done, I try to take care of it." Maybe it's this enthusiasm for her work that prompted two of her three sons to follow in their mother's footsteps.

Robyn is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to Holland. "We think the customer is king. We try very hard to work within their requirements and do what they want," says Mark. "Even when that means helping with unloading, scheduling late pickups or making deliveries on weekends or holidays, we'll do it and keep the customer informed."

A Place Holland Calls Home

Buffalo, N.Y.

Theodore Roosevelt, New York Map, Niagrara FallsThink of Buffalo, and for many people, it's lake-effect snowstorms that come to mind . . . or the Buffalo Bills. We'll go with you on the Bills—four trips to the Super Bowl, and legends such as Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed are hard to forget. But as for snow, heck, even Blue Canyon, Calif., gets more snow than Buffalo!

Time to refresh your image of Buffalo, a place Holland calls home.

Think instead of the Niagara River and its 36 miles of water flowing from Lake Superior to crash over falls just 25 miles from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Or think of the 1,200 acres of award-winning parks, parkways and circles designed by America's first landscape architect, the noted Frederick Law Olmsted. While most big cities in the United States have Olmsted-designed parks, those in Buffalo are considered his best works.

Among all this beauty, Buffalo is alive with performing arts, cultural venues and historic sites. From the city's Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Buffalo Zoo, the third-oldest zoo in America, there's plenty to see and do in Buffalo.

For military history enthusiasts, there's the historic Old Fort Niagara which overlooks Lake Ontario. The Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park houses the USS Little Rock, USS Croaker and USS The Sullivans. And did you know, after the assassination of U.S. President William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt took the Presidential oath of office while in Buffalo?

Enjoy spectator sports? Buffalo can keep you busy with the Sabres National Hockey League team, the Bandits Lacrosse team and the Bisons Minor League Baseball club in addition to the Bills.

As transportation professionals, we can't forget the Peace Bridge, linking Buffalo to Fort Erie, Ontario. Of all the bridges in the Niagara area, the Peace Bridge boasts the most commercial traffic, about 1.3 million trucks annually in addition to 6 million car crossings. And then there's the Erie Canal, 363 miles of aqueducts and locks which link Albany to Buffalo and was instrumental in opening up "the West" to commerce back in the early 1800s.

Holland knows Buffalo, and shippers know they can count on Holland, the leader in next-day service.
