Technology Services: Check Digits and Barcodes

Check Digit Logic for 10-Digit Common PRO Number

Given: X1 X2 X3 - X4 X5 X6 X7 X8 X9 X10
Check Digit = ( 3 * (X1 + X3 + X5 + X7 + X9) + (X2 + X4 + X6 + X8+ X10) ) MOD 10

MOD 10
MOD 10 is the remainder after you divide a number by 10.

Examples:
  7 MOD 10 = 7 (  7 / 10 = 0 remainder 7)
10 MOD 10 = 0 (10 / 10 = 1 remainder 0)
14 MOD 10 = 4 (14 / 10 = 1 remainder 4)
35 MOD 10 = 5 (35 / 10 = 3 remainder 5)
86 MOD 10 = 6 (86 / 10 = 8 remainder 6)

Bar Codes

Holland and Reddaway use a common bar-code format called 3-of-9. Bar codes are representations of the PRO number, which the company that ships your goods assigns. Bar codes improve the shipping process because we can quickly scan encoded labels using special readers, thus reducing the time it takes to process your shipment. They also help to ensure that your shipment remains together and arrives at the destination recorded on your bill of lading, which has the same bar code as your shipment's labels.

We assign 10-digit PRO numbers; an 11th digit is the check digit referred to in the first section above. While you may see a hyphen in your PRO number, that is not included in the bar code—only digits, including the check digit, are included in the bar code.
