By way of the highway

Highlighting how trucking affects our lives, And the people who make it happen

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, on a typical day in the United States about 32 million tons of goods valued at 25.2 billion dollars move via trucks on our nation's highways.

Here at Holland, we understand that at the core of those statistics are real, hardworking people--people who climb into a truck cab every day to keep America's gears turning. That's why we have created our new series "By way of the highway"--to honor the people who transport the goods we need to survive.

As a professional linehaul driver operating the open boards out of Akron, OH, David White doesn't drive a set route. Instead, he arrives in the terminal around 9 p.m., five nights a week and goes wherever that day's assignment takes him.

He averages around 600 miles hitting a variety of destinations. Wherever he's headed, David is dedicated to get there on time and safely.

David has been driving for 22 years, the last 12 with Holland. His dedication to safety has resulted in a flawless safety record and two state championships.

In 2011, David took first place in the Ohio Truck Driving Championship in the tanker division, sending him to the national competition. This June, David returned to the Ohio competitions, placed first in tanker, and is again returning to nationals.

"I like to try my best every day," says David. "The second you start to feel overconfident in whatever you're doing, that's when you get yourself in trouble. You have to stay on your toes and improve, and the competitions help me do that."

David explains that skills aren't enough on the road. "You also have to be courteous. You have to relax, take your time, and focus. Keep everyone out of trouble out there, not just yourself."

According to David, "Safety is based on everyone's 100-percent participation." That's a motto we at Holland can get behind.

We thank all of the safety-committed drivers at Holland for keeping our highways safe. And we wish David the best at nationals!
