Delivering an exceptional customer experience
Amy Kurz was the first office clerk when Holland opened its Milwaukee service center in 1981. Amy remembers, "At that time, rating was done manually by searching racks of rate books, manifests were typed on an electric typewriter and copies were made by using carbon paper. Lots of things have changed since then!
"With today's technology, customers have access to a wealth of information on our websites to aid with their logistics planning and real-time updates for tracking shipments."
Today, Amy is office manager for the much-larger Milwaukee center, and wears multiple hats. "I'm the HR liaison with the main office, so that means I handle payroll, office clerk training, drivers' vacation schedules and other HR duties. I also work with customers on rate quotes and as backup for the customer service team and then I handle things around the terminal, such as coordinating facility maintenance and ordering supplies. It seems as if at any moment I can be handling 10 different things."
And that's one of her favorite parts about the job, "I'm never bored! Every day is different, and time goes fast. I'm a 'get it done' kind of person and try to give 100 percent."
From Amy's perspective, that's part of the Holland way of doing business. "We're not afraid to go the extra mile," she says. "That's what customers like, and I think that's what sets us apart from the competition. The customers count on us to be there for them when special logistics are required."
Amy has built her career in transportation and logistics and speaks from experience. "When I was in high school, I had a part-time job working for a cartage company in Ohio. After graduation, I went full time. Then I worked for an import/export company, which handled sealed shipping containers and moved to Wisconsin. And that led to the job with Holland."
Amy is a 2010 I Am Holland! award recipient and is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to Holland.

A Place Holland Calls Home
It's summertime, and the place to be is along the shore of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee for Summerfest! Billed as the world's largest music festival, Summerfest 2011 is scheduled for June 29–July 3 and July 5–10.
In addition to 11 stages and more than 700 bands, the festival is an entertaining feast of food, beverages, marketplaces and interactive exhibits in addition to a diverse musical lineup.
While in Milwaukee, plan a visit to The Harley Davidson Museum®, self described as "Located at the intersection of history, art and culture." This 20-acre tribute to the American-made motorcycle includes exhibits, archives, artifacts, restaurant, café and a retail store.
Of course, Lake Michigan brings its own forms of entertainment, from shorefront walking and bicycling trails, to swimming, boating and fishing.

Industrial production up for April
In its May report, the Federal Reserve said year-over-year total industrial production was up 5.0 percent for April.
Parts shortages resulting from the March disaster in Japan is associated with a 0.4 percent drop in manufacturing production in April. Not including motor vehicles and parts, manufacturing production increased 0.2 percent over March.
Also in the report, April mine output increased 0.8 percent. Utilities output was up 1.7 percent when compared to the prior month.
Obama uses National Transportation Week to promote infrastructure agenda
In proclaiming National Transportation Week (May 15–21) and National Defense Transportation Day (May 20), President Obama positioned U.S. competitiveness as dependent on infrastructure.
"To attract new businesses to our shores, we must rebuild crumbling roads and bridges and continue to invest in the modernization of our infrastructure."
He also said, "Together, we can continue the work started by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to maintain a world-class logistics network, create new jobs and win the future for our children." Included in the president's 2012 budget plan is a large, six-year spending program for combining rail, freight and traditional highway projects; the administration has not said how it will pay for it.
Exports hit historic high in April
The Bureau of Economic Analysis of the U.S. Commerce Department reported exports of U.S. goods and services reached $175.6 billion in April. This was the largest monthly total ever recorded.
Exports grew 15.9 percent or $27.8 billion.
The trade deficit decreased from $46.8 billion to $43.7 billion for the month.
Loosening of business loan standards
In releasing its quarterly survey of senior loan officers in May, the Federal Reserve said, "The April survey indicated that, on net, bank lending standards and terms generally had eased somewhat further during the first quarter of this year." Also adding that this "pointed to a more favorable or less uncertain economic outlook."
