What's New at Holland
Thanks for a great year!
Committed to being your first choice for regional transportation, during 2010 we enhanced our next-day service offering, rededicated ourselves to service excellence, and picked up a number of cherished honors for a job well done. To say we couldn't have done it without you is not a platitude; it's a fact. Thank you for letting us serve your transportation needs!
We kicked off 2010 by accelerating transit times between Toronto and the Midwest. We added next-day service with Chicago, Joliet and Wheeling, Ill.; Cincinnati; Huntington, W.Va.; and Indianapolis. This let us also enhance our two-day service into Toronto from cities such as Atlanta; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Raleigh!
During a year of struggling economic recovery, we continued to treat each shipment as if your business depended on it. With flexibility and nimbleness, we delivered confidence with the kind of stats you're looking for:
- 96 percent overall on-time deliveries
- 99 percent delivery on all guaranteed and expedited deliveries
- 99.8 percent damage-free service
With a focus on continuous improvement, we earned the right to be listed in the Quality Register of Quality Assessed Companies by achieving recertification with ISO 9001:2000.
Registered users of hollandregional.com noticed that during the year we strengthened our online tools, making it even easier for you to schedule and track shipments and analyze your shipping history.
While our first priority is always a job well done, we're proud and appreciative when our efforts are noticed. No fewer than nine times during 2010 we were publicly honored for delivering outstanding service quality:
As we head into 2011, we'll keep working hard to make your business successful. Go to hollandregional.com or call us at 1-866-465-5263 for confidence delivered.
|A word from our customers!
" . . . I have been dealing with a lady at your firm named Marge Ulrich [Joliet, Ill.]. I would very much like to call it to your attention that she goes above and beyond to make me feel that I am her most important customer. She does her job with friendliness, intelligence, and leaves me with no unanswered questions. I feel that is so important when dealing with customers."
|—J. Derucki, Deca Vibrator Industries Inc.
A leader in safe, easy and effective funding solutions simply will not tolerate spoilage when it comes to shipping its perishable products for school fund-raising projects. With Holland, they get fast, reliable service, customized to their precise needs.
Customer: Century Resources helps expand educational opportunities through funding solutions. Group sales of its perishable items, such as chocolate and cheese, and non-perishable items, such as candles and ornaments, help schools pay for special projects.
Challenge: Perishable items require fast transit times. Deliveries at schools without docks must be closely coordinated with the students who will unload the trailers. Cost-effectiveness is closely watched to maximize fund-raising results.
Solution: Our custom solutions team created a flexible, integrated transportation solution, tailored to the customer's unique needs and requirements. The Columbus, Ohio, Holland service center makes pickups and moves them throughout our next-day footprint. To keep prices down, full trailers are picked up Monday through Wednesday at the customer's dock and converted into individual shipments for next-day deliveries Tuesday through Thursday. Destination service centers coordinate deliveries with the schools, some of which are more than 100 miles away.
Results: In the past three months, almost 600 shipments have moved through our network, and our on-time performance exceeds 99 percent. With this success, more shipments are planned!

Delivering an exceptional customer experience
"I'm doing what I love. There's never a day I don't want to get up and go to work," says Russ Simpson, professional driver (Columbus, Ohio).
"Driving got in my blood when I was a kid. I grew up on a farm, and Dad would take me with him when he delivered hay to Kentucky. Even while I was getting my bachelor's degree from Ohio State, I'd go back to trucking during the summer."
A Holland city driver for 18 years, Russ hones his driving skills by participating in the truck driving competitions.
"To compete, you have to be accident-free for a whole year, and that makes you a very careful driver," says Russ.
"Then, when you compete, you see what you can do." Russ does well, competing in the 5-axle class at the 2008 National Truck Driving Championships and nearly achieving grand-champion status in the 2010 state competition in Ohio.
Russ enjoys variety, including routes that take him to different parts of the state. Whatever the route, his customers are always his A-number-one priority. "We try to go above and beyond, whether that's from the way we load trailers so shipments don't get damaged to going inside to make our deliveries. And when it comes to next-day service, we leave the other providers behind!"
Russ is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to Holland.

A Place Holland Calls Home
Charlotte is a leading U.S. financial center, surpassed only by New York, with 24 banks and 226 banking offices, 51 commercial finance and factoring firms, 13 leasing companies, 348 mortgage bankers, 25 credit unions and 11 venture capital companies. Whew! That's a lot of banking business!
But for those of us who love gears, it's racing that calls us to the Queen City.
Charlotte is home to the new NASCAR Hall of Fame, a 150,000-square-foot building dedicated to racing and designed to educate and entertain.
Then it's over to the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex with its 1.5-mile quad-oval track, 2.25-mile road course, karting course and drag strip. Want more? The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway delivers with its state-of-the-art clay course.
Car enthusiasts also trek to Charlotte for two of the country's largest car shows—four days and 150 acres of car sales, vendor displays and great vintage-car viewing.
Holland has called Charlotte home since the mid-1990s. With 156 dock doors on eight acres, Charlotte is one of the largest service centers in the Holland network.
"Much of our business supports the automotive industry in the North, particularly our outbound service to Ohio, Indiana and Michigan," says Alex Arnold, Charlotte service center manager. "It's speed that sets us apart. Our competitors just can't match our next-day service."
Holland knows Charlotte, and shippers know they can count on Holland, the leader in next-day service.

U.S. homebuilder confidence inches upward
For the second straight month, confidence among U.S. homebuilders was up in November, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo confidence index. The index reached a five-month high at 16. Index readings below 50 mean more respondents perceive conditions as poor.
For the five years leading up to December 2007, readings averaged 54. Economists point to the abundance of existing homes on the market, which compete against new-home construction.
U.S. factory output up in October
The U.S. Federal Reserve said U.S. factory output was up 0.5 percent in October, attributing the improvement to an increase in autos, appliances and business equipment.
Overall industrial production, which includes factories, mines and utilities, was flat for the month, primarily because of warm weather and the resulting reduced demand for electricity and gas heat.
U.S. retailers see monthly gains continue
October saw the fourth straight month for retail gains, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Excluding auto parts, retail sales were up 1.2 percent over September and 7.3 percent over the prior year.
Leading the increase were building supplies (up 12.2 percent over prior year), and clothing and sporting goods (up 6.7 percent over prior year).

Tips to Make Your Life Easier
An ounce of prevention
Damage-free shipping is always our goal, and proper packaging is an important first step.
Holland builds reliability into its systems and processes. Employees are trained and audited on proper handling, loading and blocking and bracing techniques. Drivers and freight specialists meet daily to discuss proper handling and specific shipment requirements.
As you prepare your shipments for transit, here from our professionals are some tips on packaging and stacking a pallet to keep in mind.
- Proper packaging protects your shipment during transit. Select the packaging that's appropriate for your product. Cartons, crates, cages or drums are good alternatives.
- Use sufficient packing materials around and between items, an inner box within the packaging, or a "shroud" of blankets or cushioning materials around your product for protection.
- Build a cube by aligning the vertical edges of multiple cartons and maintaining a flat, level top surface.
- Stack cartons squarely within the pallet, and use stretch wrap, shrink wrap, banding or spray adhesives to keep items together and to preserve the cube shape.
- Maintain carton strength by properly stacking pallets. For example, an interlocked pattern reduces carton strength by up to 50 percent, misaligned cartons reduce carton strength by 30 percent.
- Place single containers on outside corners of pallets, or ship them loosely.
- Secure cartons to the pallet with bands, tie downs, ratchet straps, stretch- or shrink-wrap, or breakaway adhesive.
Chemicals and hazardous materials have their own special shipping needs, and Holland has the expertise, processes and technology to help you there, too.
