Shippers praise Holland quality

Map highlighting Atlanta and TorontoFor the 25th consecutive year, Holland earned the coveted Logistics Management Quest for Quality award, receiving the distinction in two categories: Midwest/North Central regional LTL and Expedited Motor Carriers.

Shippers' voting determines who receives the Quest for Quality recognition. And who better to judge service levels and acknowledge excellence in the key attributes of on-time performance, value, information technology, customer service, and equipment and operations?

Shippers know the Holland network blankets the Midwest and Southeast with coverage, and that translates to more next-day lanes than any other provider in the region.

customer testimonialLeading the region in next-day lanes is not enough. Shippers also want a provider that will get shipments delivered on time and in good shape. That's Holland.

Our on-time performance in August averaged 96 percent, and we attained 99 percent for guaranteed and expedited services! Our claim ratio is 0.36 percent . . . about a third of the industry average. This means you can count on Holland to have shipments where you need them and in original condition, so you can keep your production lines moving and your retail shelves stocked for sales.

Shippers also know that information technology and timely communications are essential in high-quality customer service. They see our real-time online tracking updates and automatic shipment notifications as a way to improve the service they offer their customers.

For more than 80 years, Holland has been delighting customers. And when you look at our combination of on-time performance, damage-free delivery, customer service, information technology, equipment and operations . . . it all adds up to a tremendous value for your supply chain.

See for yourself. Go to hollandregional.com or call us at 1-866-465-5263 to schedule your next shipment.

Transporting our heartfelt appreciation

Transporting care packages to military personnelWhen a St. Louis radio station and the Teamsters Local 600 organized the collection of care packages for troops in Afghanistan, Holland was there to help.

On Saturday, July 31, donations of non-perishable food, health and hygiene products, travel games and stationery poured in—enough to fill more than 700 care packages! Holland employees helped sort, package and seal individual boxes, and then transported the boxes to government facilities for shipping to Afghanistan.

While Holland is known for on-time, damage-free shipping, this project achieved even greater results—the happiness of our country's soldiers who face danger and struggle with the loneliness of missing loved ones everyday.

Thank you to all who made contributions for this important mission. We were proud to be part of the response.

". . . Your boxes could not have arrived at a better time . . . in a remote area lying next to Pakistan, there is a group of young soldiers who are still celebrating the riches contained in those packages . . . Thank you so much . . . You made their day . . . week . . . and their month." --Lyn P.

". . . a heartfelt thanks, not only from myself, but all the men and women that are here customer testimonialwith me. I am amazed that the city of St. Louis could pull together in such a huge way to make a difference in the quality of our lives here!!! I really wish that you could have seen the looks on our faces as we were opening the boxes this afternoon—priceless!!" —Staff Sgt. Scott F.

"I heard from a soldier that received a care package sent from your Troop Care Package event . . . I wish I could convey how much he appreciated the package. He said 'getting something from home is a huge, big deal,' and helps him and all the soldiers get through the tough times." —Aunt Kathy

"Just got the best care package in the world. Milk, pudding and chocolate. Who put my name on that list?"
—1st Lt. Brady H.

". . . Just wanted to thank you for the care packages I received. It was greatly appreciated and it's nice to know people back home still think of us." —Lt. Cpl. C.

Ready for holiday shoppers?

Not late. Not early. Right on time. This year's holiday merchandise is coming in. Make sure shelves are stocked and ready for customers with Multiday Window service for retail shippers. You select a specific day or range of days, Monday through Friday, for delivery, and we'll make sure your shipment arrives as specified.

Retailers are paying close attention to their supply chains as a way to help manage costs, and more and more are implementing fees or invoice deductions when deliveries are made earlier or later than specified on the purchase order. These chargebacks can add up to thousands of dollars for vendors.

Multiday Window™ service from Holland is a complete Must-Arrive-by-Date (MABD) solution with precise delivery capabilities throughout our service area. In addition to avoiding chargebacks, we can help you improve your scorecard performance, which may lead to additional business with the retailer.

Keep your customer relationships strong and your sales on target with delivery precision you can count on from Holland. To schedule a shipment, go to  hollandregional.com or call Holland at 866-465-5263.

Indianapolis

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, map with Indianapolis highlighted, sites of interestSaid to be within a day's drive for half the population of the United States, there are many good reasons to plan a trip to Indianapolis.

It's a city full of surprises. Sure, we know the Super Bowl XLI-winning Colts. Then, there's "the Greatest Spectacle in Racing," the Indianapolis 500, held each Memorial weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But there's more than Colts and cars in this midwestern metropolis.

Like many cities, transportation played an important role in its development. An 1827 Congressional grant gave the state of Indiana the funds to build a canal that would connect the Wabash River to the Maumee River. Today, Central Canal forms the backdrop for more-recreational types of activities in the White River State Park (WRSP).

A trip to WRSP includes venues such as the Indianapolis Zoo, the White River Gardens, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, the NCAA Hall of Champions, an IMAX theater, Indiana State Museum and Victory Field along with space to walk, trails to bicycle, and boats to paddle away an afternoon.

Indianapolis is thought to be second only to Washington, D.C., in the number of memorials. Perhaps its most-famous monument, situated in the center of the city, is Soldiers and Sailors Monument, dedicated to those who died in the Civil and Spanish-American wars. The Indiana World War Memorial Plaza features the American Legion Mall with its World War II, Korean and Vietnam memorials, and the Cenotaph Square Memorial, an empty soldier's tomb honoring the memory of those who fought and died in the World Wars. The Admiral Raymond Spruance Memorial Basin honors the military expertise of this World War II hero and is a recognizable part of the Indianapolis cityscape.

Estimated to be the 14th largest city in the United States by population, Indianapolis is larger than Boston, Seattle or Denver. In addition to being the state capital, Indianapolis is a city where tourism, healthcare, education and finance all play an important role in the city's economy.

Holland has called Indianapolis "home" since 1933 when we opened our first service center there. Centrally located, our Indianapolis operations can reach every service center in the Holland footprint with next-day service—even into Toronto, Canada. Situated on 35 acres, this 120-dock operation is the largest in the Holland system in terms of shipment count.

Holland knows Indianapolis, and shippers know they can count on Holland, the leader in next-day service. To schedule a pickup, go to  hollandregional.com or call 1-866-465-5263.

Consumer confidence up slightly

People walking in a hallwayThe Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index for August was at 53.5, up from 51 in July. The August 2009 reading was 54.5. "Consumer confidence posted a modest gain in August, the result of an improvement in consumers' short-term outlook. Consumers' assessment of current conditions, however, was less favorable as employment concerns continue to weigh heavily on consumers' attitudes. Expectations about future business and labor market conditions have brightened somewhat, but overall, consumers remain apprehensive about the future," says Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board's Consumer Research Center.

Revised BOL for shipping hazardous materials

Canada flag stuck in Ontario mapBeginning Oct. 1, 2010, some hazardous material shipping documents may require a contact name or contract number in addition to the 24-hour emergency response telephone number. Holland is ready for those shipments with a revised bill of lading form.

This new version is available as a paper form, EDI, and on our Holland website. When you create a BOL online you also have the option to simultaneously schedule a pickup, print a PDF of the bill of lading and print a shipping label. The electronic BOL data integrates into the Holland system, which minimizes key-stroke billing errors and improves data integrity for detailed tracking information on the shipment.

For more information on the revised bill of lading, go online or call 1-866-465-5263.
